Camerota

Nestled in the heart of the Cilento National Park, the village of Camerota offers a journey through time, rich in history, culture, and centuries-old traditions. Its narrow cobbled streets, stone archways, and ancient houses tell stories of past eras, revealing picturesque views at every turn.

Overlooking the village, the majestic Norman-Swabian Castle, with its imposing 12th-century tower, offers breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding valley. Historic churches, such as the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Church of San Nicola di Bari, house artworks and relics, bearing witness to a deep-rooted faith.

Strolling through the historic center, visitors will find artisan workshops where master potters, known as “pignatari,” keep alive the ancient art of clay craftsmanship—a tradition dating back to Ancient Greece. These workshops offer the chance to purchase unique handcrafted pieces, symbols of the area’s authenticity.

Descending toward the coast, you reach Marina di Camerota, a stunning gem of the Cilento Coast, where the deep blue sea meets the warm hues of houses overlooking the harbor. Its Blue Flag beaches rank among the most beautiful in Italy, from the famous Calanca Beach, with its golden sand and calm waters, to the breathtaking Baia degli Infreschi, an untouched paradise accessible only by sea or via scenic hiking trails through Mediterranean vegetation. Here, life follows the rhythm of the waves, between seaside restaurants serving fresh fish and fishermen’s boats returning at sunset.

Camerota and Its History

The exact founding date of the village is unknown, but it is likely that it developed around the 10th century, like many other neighboring towns. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the area was already experiencing significant migratory flows, mainly from nearby Calabria, led by Italo-Greek monks. The establishment of the Principality of Salerno and the land redistribution policies carried out in the Cilento region undoubtedly encouraged the settlement of the area.

The first Baron of Camerota known in historical records is Sarolo (Sarulus de Cammarota), documented in 1116. He was followed by Ruggiero di Camerota (Rogerius qui dicitur de Cammarat(a), dominus de Corbella), mentioned in 1144, and Florio di Camerota, who was born around 1120 and died sometime after 1189. Florio was an important official in the Norman Kingdom. Continua a leggere >>>
